Bernie McKigney resides in Moorhead MN. He is a 40 year member of American Legion Post #2 of Fargo ND. Bernie is Vietnam veteran and recieved the purple heart while serving his country. Bernie served with the 11th Infantry Brigade-American Division. He also served with the Vietnam 283rd Infantry Center Band, Fort Benning Georgia, 3rd Infantry Division Band, Warzburg, Germany, and the 18th Army Band, Fargo ND. Besides the many area bands Bernie plays with, He also has directed the Red River Valley Veterans Concert Band of Fargo ND for over 25 years.
About The Band
The Minnesota American Legion 9th District Band was established in 1929 in Crookston MN. The original band director and organizer was Ted Thorson of Fertile MN. Bill Pond of Bemidji MN served also served as band director for many years. The bands current director is Bernie McKigney.
The band currently has a roster of over 50 musicians from over 20 communities throughout the 9th District of Minnesota. The bands annual schedule includes the mid winter conference, commanders testimonial, district convention and department convention, all of which the band has faithfully performed at every year since 1929. The band also attends the American Legion national convention approximately every other year.
